Default Memory/4gb/Computer says 3gb

Doing a new build. Computer and Belarc Advisor both say there is 3gb Ram, but when you read the Slots they say there is 1 gb in each of 4 slots. I have tried each 1gb strip on each 1 slot and get 1gb reading. Then used the 1gb strip on every slot and reads 1gb. What am I missing. This is my first build and the specs are in My PC details.
