Default another memory problem

I have an hp pavillion a1340n and added another gig of ram to second slot but computer does not see it I flip flopped them still nothing tried the new one only in each slot worked fine but it won't see both the memory checker sites show one slot as empty

no matter which order the sticks are in it does favor one to the other does this mean anything
