AW,

yeah. i ran it with just the gig, and it registered as 960, then i turned off and stuck his 512 along side the gig, and it registered as 1.43. it's proper ****** me off dude. my mate has the bargain ram of the year, and a sharper acting pc, lol. by the way, now i know the ram works, i should make it known that i bought it off ebay as a new product from an american company called bzboyz.com (they sell new products on ebay all the time) i ordered it 10 days ago and it arrived this morning. the cost of £19.50 is excellent as in this country you're looking at £45 ish. One other thing. my mate's pc has 4 slots, 2 blue coloured, and 2 black. his existing 512 ram and the gig i inserted are in the blue slots, whereas i only have 2 and they're black slots. don't know if colour of slots means/restricts anything.

Steve

the different colors indicate he has dual channel memory. same color slots correspond to the same channels. usually. dual channel memory doubles memory bandwith. ok... so the old memory works in your computer, but the new stuff doesnt....... hmmm....

hmm.. well its a possiblity the RAM you bought is a different voltage memory than what the mainboard supports. that could potentially do that...

I agree with AW. It is most likely some voltage issue. In fact, I had the exact same problem today installing memory into a computer.

I installed an identical stick of memory (different brand) to double the current amount and not only did the unit not boot up, it gave me a beep code. Take out the new memory, no problems.

Unfortunately, with memory, it really is just hit or miss. For some reason memory isn't very standardized. Some computers just don't like some memory. And it is nearly impossible to research cause most memory that comes with store bought computers won't have any labels showing brand/model numbers and such. So you'll most likely never find out what voltage the memory you currently have is using.

It's pretty annoying. Especially being a tech and having to try a few different sticks of memory before getting one to work. With memory, it really is just the safest bet to buy from a local retailer (for more $$$) that has a return policy. Unless you are building the unit from scratch and you buy identical sticks of memory and know all the specs. Or unless you are willing to go through the annoying RA process of online suppliers. I'd rather pay a bit more lol.

Hope that helps

Freeware download-- RAM tester-- in my sig-- easiest use-- is with a floppy disk-- it can be used with a CD--

Note: You must make a Bootable disc- it does not run in Windows-- and let it run for an hour/two/three-- if you get lots of errors it's no good-- any US distributor should have a toll-free number to call.

he has two colors, that means he has dual channel memory, which doesnt have any impact on this. DIMM mans Dual Inline Memory Module. a RAM module is called a DIMM. all RAM is. it appears to wadd and i that the reason your new memory doesnt work is because it runs on a different voltage than the motherboard supports.
