Starting yesterday, if I use RAM slots 1 & 3 on my computer, it beeps and won't start. I can still use slots 2 and 4 but I have 4 RAM cards I want to use. Any ideas on why two slots don't work and two do or how to fix them?
If your certain that your RAM slots are no longer working, forgive my ignorance, but how would you expect to fix this yourself?
I'm not sure what the cause if the slots manfunctions is, and if I knew that I could figure out what to do about it. I posted on this forum so that I might get an answer to what is causing the problem and\or how fix it.
Since these were working at one point, I think it's safe to assume that this would be a hardware problem. Unless your hiding some qualifications and skills, the term would be to replace the faulty component or board rather than fix.
What make and model motherboard and RAM do you have? and also, have you performed any hardware changes around the time this problem occured? Have you tried using the RAM from the other two slots to make sure it's a slot problem as apposed to a RAM issue?
The scan says I have 4 slots and two are unused. In other words, accurate.
Also, my motherboard P/N is 5188-2526. I have used the same two RAM cards to check all four slots so the RAM cards are not the issue. A few days before the problem occured I had to change my CPU fan.

If they sat open for quite a while --there could be tarnish issues inside the slots themselves. The voltages are really small-- it does not take much.
Good electrical contact cleaner and a few swabs/compressed air.
