Default ram only recognised sometimes!

hi everyone, i need help as my head is melted!

i have been given an older computer, 1.3ghz and 128 ram (1 stick of 128mb). it's a fijitsu seimens. so i went to buy more ram, and got 512mb to put into the extra slot, and hoped it would just recognise it! but it hasn't!

so i though maybe the motherboard couldnt handle it, so i was trying to find out the name of the motherboard, and found on the net that a program called ctbios would do it for me! It was in german so wasn't much help to me, but it said that i had 640mb of memory in the system! how can the program recognise it and the computer can't! please help me in my crazed and frustrated torment!

barney from ireland!

Hi there barney and welcome to PCHF.

I suspect that the program you used was referring to the base memory of 640kb and not 640mb. Use one of these programs so that you can identify your motherboard make and model and allow us to help you further....

Howdy barneyk,

Sorry for the delay..

What operating system are you using? Also do you know if it is the same rated speed? If not then that can be your problem, for example you have the 128 meg of pc 2100 and the other is pc 400 etc..
