Default [Answered] Dual Channel... Different Speed RAM DIMMs?
I forgot about some RAM i had lying around from before. a gig.. Problem is, the computer i want to put it in has DDR400. It is has dual channel. the RAM i want to put in it is DDR333. From what i have read, if i put hte 333 in a different set from 400 it will operate each at the correct speeds. Unfortunately i have a gateway so i cannot adjust the RAM timings and settings. Also, if i put in 2 more DIMMs it will exceed hte PSU by about 5-10 watts. (PSU is 305watts) Is this ok? Can i put the ram in and it will work right? And will i need a better PSU?

The motherboard should detect the memory speed and slow the faster memory down to match the 333, to keep it dual channel.

Well that's what high end boards do - I'm not sure about gateway computers.

kneejerk reaction is that it won't work, just because of the differences in speed. Also, what size are the current sticks in there? You could exceed what that motherboard will hold if they are good sized sticks.

ok.. i tried it, tehy are all 512MB DIMMs. teh mobo also supports 2GB. Unforutanetly it slowed them all down to 333. Im trying to decide whats better, 2GB @ 333mhz, or 1GB @ 400Mhz... Which one is better for running vista? I plan on upgrading to faster DIMMS later on anyway. Also, is ~310-~320 watts too much for a 305 watt model PSU? I dont want to upgrade if at all possible. I only had it running for a littel while, because dad is still transfereing files from it to out new one. I didnt see any problems yet, but i dont want to be in the middle of something and have it die...

I'm not entirely sure about which is better for running vista, but with ram, quantity is usually better than speed, so if your mobo supports it, I'd go with the two gig option, especially if you are going to play with vista, as that likes to use a gig to be happy anyhow.

Oh gosh yer. Vista is RAM Hungry and ReadyBoost doesn't seem to work that well from what i've heard.
