Default RAM Compatability

I would like to upgrade the RAM in my Dell Inspiron 1150. The Dell website offers two choices, 512 MB and 1G. Are these the only two options I have? Could I get a 2G from another manufacturor? What do I need to look for to ensure compatability? Are there any limitations to how much RAM I can upgrade to? I have a 2.6 Ghz Celeron processor.

Here's an extension to my question(s). My owners manual say's the following about memory:

Memory Module Connector: 2 user-accessible SODIMM sockets
Memory Module Capacities: 64, 128, 256, and 512 MB
Memory Type: 2.5-V SODIMM
Standard Memory: 128 MB
Maximum Memory: 1 GB
Memory Access Time: clock speed = 266 MHz

Does this mean that I can install no more than 1G of Ram, and must do so using two 512 MB units? Some websites are telling me that I can have up to 2 gigs. Dell is offering to sell me a 1G (knowing my make and model).

What is the most memory I can have on my laptop?

The bad news is Dell is right.. Your board can only handle 1 gig of memory which would be 2 sticks of 512 megs chips..

There may be a BIOS upgrade that would allow you to put more ram in.. You will need pc 133.

Sorry for the long delay in responding Willybobo...

As for the pc 133 it is just rams rated speed..

Like DDR 400 is called pc 3200 take the 400 times by 8.. It runs at 200mhz in single channel mode but if you have dual channel ram it will run @ 400mgz..

So 133 times 2 equals 266.. yes it seems they could have made it easier but they did not lol
