Default [Answered] Memory Error help?

Hi

I recently bought two 1gb of memory for my computer. To me it has not done that much difference to the performance of the PC from what i would expect?? Do you have to change any settings?

Also since i got the RAM, at least once a week i get the blue screen PFN_LIST_CORRUPT. What does this mean? i did a google search and it mentioned physical RAM errors or that the Drivers were passing bad memory? What does this mean?

I contacted the seller i bought it from a he's replied with this:-

"Please visit your manufacturers website for any available BIOS updates.
Also, make sure that your BIOS is set to automatically detect your installed RAM instead of trying to read it at a predetermined speed or capacity.
The RAM speed options are under advanced or advance chip-set settings in BIOS.

Once you've updated your BIOS, be sure to run a clear CMOS.
Very often, BIOS settings will not function properly with a new revision until you clear the CMOS memory."

Is this good advice and should i follow it?

Thanks

Hi efc,

Welcome to PCHF.

Many people believe that increasing RAM will increase performance. However, this is only the case if you were using more than the installed amount of RAM in the first place. When you have used up all your memory, the data is stored on your HDD instead. To check how much memory you are using, press [CTRL] + [ALT] + [DEL] and click on the Performance tab. Under Physcial Memory you will see how much you have free. In reality, very few people use more than a gig, and you should check how much Available memory you have free with all your apps open, before purchasing more.

As for your blue screen of death, it's could well be faulty memory. This means that a location of memory is bad, and cannot be read or written to. There are tests that can be done to check memory, but first, can you follow the instructions for BSOD's on my signature, and post a dump/log file back here. I'll check it out before we proceed.

Howdy efc84,
What the guy you emailed is trying to say is overclock your memory.. Mad is right, more ram will help only a little bit if you dont need anymore.. As for your error's download and run the below program

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Can you also post the actual files for me here:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini031907-01.dmp -and-
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini031807-01.dmp

Click on Go Advanced below the Qucik Reply message back. Click on the attachment icon (paperclip). Select the two dump files saved in c:\windows\minidump.
