I would go with somthing higher than the DDr 400, if you go with say pc 533 it will help your cpu out alot. Well maybe not alot. The best thing you can do for your pc is buy the highest speed ram. Throw that in there and if you ever overclock that cpu will go places it has not seen before.

Maybe i didnt tell you, the computer is a Gatway 832GM. no overclocking features at all, and the highest supported RAM is DDR400. Personally i think DDR2533 is too slow anyway. If you have a AMD Athlon X2 5000+ like my parents new computer does, DDR2533 really is a bottleneck, only 1 GB/s better than DDR400. I guess it depends which version dad buys. if he getss Home Basic, a gig is fine, but if he gets premium or ultimate or anything else i will need more.

Oh did not see it was a gateway... And Pc 533 is not DDR2... 400 is a bottle-neck compared to pc 533. as for Ultimate ya you will need more. I have it and I have 2 gigs of pc 8000, it does alright..

i am trying to get my parents to buy Home Premium, and i will get half a gig now and another half later on. Considering that our new Gateway Desktop has 2GB DDR2 PC533 and it works great, i think PC3200 is good. The computer i ahve been talking about is the one in my pull down thingy
