Default [Answered] beginner question....

I'm looking to do some upgrades on my pc, and am going to start with RAM. I have been looking around at prices and brands, but how can I tell what specific type of chips I need? Is there a info window I can pull up on my computer, or do I need to find the specs in the manual? Also, any recommendations in buying memory (brands, bang for the buck, etc.)?
Thanks in advance

Hi there, you can use the very handy Crucial Memory Advisor tool above this thread - it will tell you exactly what memory you need.

Excellent!! A friend told me about Tiger Direct, along with NewEgg. I guess I will shop around until I find what I need at a good price! Thanks for the help.

I have 4 slots. Let's say I want to add 1 GB (RAM). Is it better to go with the 2 x 512 or one 1 GB chip? I guess I'm asking if there is a performance difference?

and they shoul usually be installed in slots numbered

1 and 3
or 2 and 4

...so they are on the same IRQ. See your Mobo manual/website.

and by the way Crucial makes very good quality RAM ...too. (I have no affiliation with them-- but I am running a gig of their memory)
