Default ram issue?

I'm just wondering if someone has some input.

I've been having PC problems for a bit now. I ALWAYS thought it was my Hard drive.. however I'm starting to think it's actually the RAM.

My PC will freeze at many times.. such as: when burning a cd.. at some point it will freeze, downloading files around 40-100mb, playing games and it will get laggy at some point, using 1-2 tabs for IE and having to shift back and forth it will freeze.

After it freezes it WON'T load.. or USUALLY won't load the PC.. it will show the windows XP bar... and then it will freeze.. or it will load and it will show a black screen.

I used memtest as I have 1GB Ram and did a 1024mb test... and got a error.. so could it be the ram then? I don't want to go out to dish out more money, as I'm saving for a laptop this week or next, if the ram ISN'T bad.

Hope someone can help me out.

Thanks.

Hi Harry,

Welcome to PCHF.

If memtest picked up a fault in memory, then yep, I'm afraid this would be a physical fault, and would need to seek a replacement. However, was this just one error? Do you have one or two sticks of memory? If you have two then removing the faulty one would maybe be a temporary solution, until you have enough money to buy a new chip?

Hi, thanks for the welcome

I have 2 512MB Chips.. I tested BOTH of them togethor so far. I did get 2 different errors.. but to be sure I'll take one out and then test them 1 by 1 and see if they both are faulty.

Also is it best to do memtest in safemode? and if I have only ONE 512mb chip in the system, i should ONLY type in "512" to test in memtest?

Yep. Safe mode is fine also, should work OK in normal, but your right safe mode would be better. I personally prefer the DOS version.

Yup, I agree with madmonkey - DOS memtest is the way to go...it runs off the disk and requires no memory usage what-so-ever...best way to test it
