I have a little problem and require some assistance if possible.

I have two RAM slots in my PC, a green one and a purple one.

My PC stopped working so I opened up my computer to find the green RAM slot (which is the only one used - with a 512mb samsung stick) had completely burnt out all the way along all the little tabs on the stick AND the slot.

Can I buy a new RAM stick and just use the second RAM port (purple one) and leave the burnt out green port useless? Will this affect performance and will it actually work at all?

Thank you for your help
Cheers
James

Hi James,

Welcome to PCHF.

Normally the different colours signify different types of RAM. Which motherboard do you have?

If it only has 2 ram slot this means it is used for dual ram. You can use the same type of speed of memory in the second slot, but the question is ..is it the motherboard that fried the ram in the first place?

Thanks for the replies. I now know the RAM slot fried as my Dad decided to change the stick for a 1gb card but didnt realise the card was broken due to one of the little gold tabs being missing thus causing it to fry.

I slot left as I mentioned is a purple slot. I have ordered the same stick as was originally in there (which worked fine and was DDR) just a bigger version (a 1gb 2700 instead of a 512mb 2700 stick).

I am hoping this will work in the purple slot though the 512mb was in the green slot.

Do you think a DDR stick will work in the purple slot alone?

I dont really understand all this stuff as you might have guessed - but am learning quickly

Cheers
James

It's the old SIMM's that require two, so yes, it will work alone as long as the motherboard isn't damaged from your fried chip!

Great - thanks alot!!

And it makes no difference that this port is purple but the fried one is green?

Thanks again!

The two colours do normally signify a difference between the two, but I've never heard of DDR's that require two slot's for it to work.
