Default 128Mx64? RAM Confusion!

Hello friends,

A buddy of mine has recently purchased some RAM off of eBay, labled DDR SDRAM 3200 (400Mhz) 128Mx64. I know that his FSB can support 400 Mhz (and even if the FSB was slower, it should still slow down to the speed of the FSB and work right?) and can take DDR-SDRAM.

The memory fits into the slot (both latches close) and his computer tries to boot up but freezes before it can even finish POST. There are two things I have noticed about the RAM which I have never noticed before, first on the sticker it has 128Mx64 written on it and the RAM has a shorter height then any DDR-SRAM I have ever seen (by height I mean from the pins up).

I've tried to run it on my computer as well, but it freezes at the some point. Anyone know what this is about?

I'd really appreciate and advice,
thank you.

Hi azurepancake,

You've most likely got yourself either bad memory, or ECC Registered memory

I agree ! you need to check the specs for the mobo and see whether or not it uses ECC Registered or NON ECC Registered memory.

Also note that some mobo's are very particular as to what brand type of ram is installed....for instance some boards can use Kingston brand ram but have major issues with Kingston Value ram( low cost). Another issue is that some ram don't like to be paired with ram from a different manufacturer.

It is always wiser to go with a top brand name when it comes to purchasing ram and always try to go with the same brand as installed (if possible)
