Exclamation problems with computer boot up

I have currently a compaq with a 950 mhz processor
the computer stalls apon boot up or start up randomly the cpu remains on and the harddisk light remains on but the monitor stays blank or with the screen frozen at the position in time with the frame on the monitor i may have to restart it various times manually in order to get maybe 5 - 10 mins of time to do anything

what im wondering is could this be a RAM problem or memory problem of some sort ?

Howdy gmann77,
This does not sound like a memory problem. As it does more of a heat issue, or even a bad driver. Have you defragmented your Hard drives lately? Also please download the below program and run it and let us know what the temps are. What operating system are you using? XP 98 etc,

SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

It personally sounds to me as if you have a problem with your video card.

When you say bootup or startup...what part exactly is it getting stuck at?

The computer will not start in safe mode it never works the screen always freezes

The heatsink is never too hot( before when the computer was working i ran speed fan the temp remained in the low 30's most of the time, that was the only temp that showed in one slot) , the hard drive did not need defragmenting , the os was xp pro then i changed to home edition, then i ran a linux os called ubuntu

the computer gets stuck at random parts mainly during bootup, but sometimes it boots up , lately it hasn't, most of the time the monitor stays blank or the light on the monitor switch turns into a yellow color the monitor seems like it is not responding to the cpu p.s. all the other peripherals are not working either

i think it is the video card or a bad driver or no driver for the video card, the thing is if i take out the video card there is no way for me connect my monitor to the cpu

Do you have an onboard vga? (onboard graphics as well)? If you can download the latest drivers for your video card on another pc or if you have enough time to download them from your own you can see if it is a bad driver.

It could also be the power supply...
if it's getting frozen in random locations...the power supply could be sending bad signals all over the place...
