Default [Answered] Mixing Ram

I have recently upgraded the Ram in my system, it originaly had 256mb when bought and ran at 2700. I then went to the local comp shop for an extra 512mb, first one wouldnt run, exchanged it for another was OK. But I noticed that the 512mb stick was only 2100 speed. Now as I understand it the ram was now running at the slowest speed ie 2100, is that correct? Have just added a 1Gb stick of Crucial memory to the 512mb the crucial one is rated at 2700, but the system will be running at 2100 wont it? Now do I remove the 512mb and replace with the original 256mb stick which runs at 2700? would this make a bast difference in performance or should i leave it as it is?

Hey Sbowler,
Looking at the board the top FSB is 333Mhz which is pc2700 (pc2100 is 266Mhz).If you remove the pc2100 you'll basically be removing just under a third of your memory, but upping the speed by about the same. I shouldn't think that this will make a major difference to the performance of your system.
If you want to check you can get a system tester like THIS and try the system with and without the pc2100.
let know your scores

Tricky one. Can you not take the 2100 back to the shop and exchange it for a 2700 module? It will always "clock down" so for the sake of 256mb I would remove the RAM for the better performance...no, actually, with the price of RAM right now, I would get another 2700 module :P

Depending on what you use your computer for, is what you should do with the memory.

If you just play games and surf the net - then you'll get the most out of having the RAM running faster (so remove the 512mb and replace it with the 256mb).

However, if you do more development (video/software editing) where your computer crunches alot of numbers, leave the 512mb in there...as the more memory will definatly be beneficial.

If you do a mix of both, i'd leave the 512mb in there still...same reason.
