Cool [Answered] memory upgrade + FSB question

Hello. I have an abit kv7 motherboard and I need to install new ram. I have learned it takes sd ram- (168 pin im guessing is universal for sd ram?). anyway, I am confused about FSB speeds. I think i remember when I used to actually be somewhat knowledgable that your ram FSB should match your cpu FSB. Although i have an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ When i check the bios it tells me (AM ATHALON XP 2600+ (333). Then below it it says FSB (166). Why is it telling me its running at 166? Could it because my ram speed is lower than it should be? I dont know what its speed is. Any insight would be very helpful and appreciated. Thanks!

edit:: apparently its 184 pin dimms i need. my mistake. same question though!!

Hey ropeadopa!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

You will probably need DDR-RAM instead of SD-RAM.
This is an advantage as that is cheaper. The FSB you'll need is probably 333, but:

Can you please download CPU-Z here: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

And post back what it says about your (current) RAM.

That will help you and us a lot to find out what RAM you need.

Blue

hey thanks for your help. OK CPU-Z says:
TYPE: DDR
Size: 256mb
Frequency: 168.4mhz
FSBRAM: 1:1
CAS#Latency: 2.5 clocks
RAS to CAS# delay: 5 clocks
RAS# precharge: 5 clocks
Cycle time: 7 clocks

yeah i realized i needed DDR ram after i posted. Isnt it strange the frequency is 168? when i upgrade should i remove this ram completely and put in a stick of 333?

Hope someone else knows.

Oke, I was gonna say that you could check your mainboard manual to see whether you could also use DDR-400 (PC3200), but that's no longer necessary then.

Let us know if it works for you.
