Default [Answered] Memory reuse/addition?

I have some old Sun computers, and one has a gig of memory, I wanted to know if there is any way to use that and put it into my dell. Ive tryed this before with regular memory from a pc to pc, but failed and blew the memory chip. Is there any way? Without having to buy memory? just reuse?

Hi Iwant...,

My welcome to PCHF. We have a great group of techs here, and I know we can help you to better understand your memory issues.

First of all you have to know the memory requirements of your MOBO. There are lots of variables, and you have to make sure that you only use the memory type that the MOBO is designed for.

If the RAM from your Sun PC is compatible, then it shouldn't be a problem. If it is not you run the risk of blowing more than the memory chip.

The information regarding the type of RAM your Dell needs is probably in the owner's manual. If you have difficulty finding it, please post back with the model number and we can find it for you.

If you would like more detailed information about the Sun RAM, it would be helpful if you posted the information on the side of the stick as well.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

ok one side has a sticker labeling:
Samsung 9936H
Korea
KMM372F3280CK4-5

And another sticker on the opposing side labeling:
SUN P/N
370-3799-01
DATA CODE: 9950
256MB RAM, 50NS

I hope this helps solve the issue, and as far as I know it looks like it'll fit, same length and all. My dell takes 184 pin DIMM memory and is a Dimension 3000.

Size is not the only issue (by far) with memory.

Want an easy way to tell what size/speed/type of memory your Dell PC needs? Use the Crucial Memory Advisor Tool. Then the other memory would have to be thoroughly compared & DOUBLE- checked to be sure it is compatible ( frankly it is doubtful) and Lady Green Witch is absolutely right --you could damage a lot more than the RAM sticks.

See here:

update... After quite a search-- the Ram in the Sun machines is EDO DRAM circa 1994-- NOT compatible. Sorry.

Great research Ih8bills,

@Iwant..., sorry, unfortunately, with technology, that is the case more often than not. The older versions just don't stay compatible for long.

Let us know if there is any more information that you need on this, in the mean time, I am going to mark this one Answered.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN
