Default hp pavilion ze4420us

Notebook kept freezing. Seemed like it was bad memory ...i added memory ...256 ..once i added memory the computer just started flashing all of its lights and the power, sounds like it goes on for 5 seconds then goes off. It keeps repeating the with the lights flashing until I take the battery out.
I have put in new memry, switched the meory around in the 2 slots, used just old memory and just the new ...now kingston 512.
I took the HD out and the battery out and pressed the start button, I also reset it by the reset hole in the back.

I am now thinking it is the motherboard since taking out the hard drive has no effect at all in stopping the flashing lights and the attempts at starting up.
I still have to unplug it to shut it down.

I thought I could take it apart and take out the internal battery I cant figure out how to do this ...and maybe take a stab at putting in a new motherboard...anything else I can do to diagnose this ??? Is there any directions for taking apart the notebook?
I did a google search and searched HP.com and couldnt find anything.
This seems to be a common problem because i see another discussion going with the same problem.
Thanks
jan

Hey there Cyberjan.

  • Firstly are you sure that the new memory you bought is compatible with your laptop?
Install the old RAM chip, the one that was originally in the laptop, then lets see if we can remove the internal battery.

Checkout this PDF file from the HP website, follow the instructions for removing the keyboard, once you have taken that off you should be able to get at the motherboard:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00246219.pdf
  • Once you locate the internal battery, remove it from the board and try to power up the laptop. (in theory it won't turn on)
  • Replace the internal battery and try to power up the laptop again, let us know if this solves the problem.
  • Alternatively if you are able to remove and then reseat the processor that could also help.

Try this link:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/m...roduct=385139&

You need to click on 'Maintenance and Service Guide'

Alternatively if that doesn't work then copy my last link into google and search for the whole link, it should come up with one result which is the PDF file.

Oh i found the manual...It says bios ic cannot be replaced separately. If defective you must replace the motherboard. If possible boot with bios floppy or crisis recovery floppy???

thanks

Don't worry about that section, that would probably be replacing the whole BIOS chip which we don't wanna do.

Check the manual on page 130 you will see an "exploded view" of the components.
Typically there is nothing explaining what the numbers are but by the looks of it number 11 is the motherboard. There is a white circle (could that be your cmos battery)?

Alternatively the CMOS battery can be connected to the board by two wires (small white pin), and is usually a bit thinner than the normal PC battery.
