Default Can I use different size DIMMs?

My mobo has 4 DIMM slots. It came with 512mb (2x256mb) of PC400. I plan on adding one 512mb stick (possibly two). So what problems may come if I add one stick of PC400 512mb? Is Dual Channel running two identical DIMMS in consecutive slots? So...will I only receive 50% of the possible speed by running one stick?

Thanks for the welcome, Hengis.

The link has all the specs of my PC.

At the time (1+ years ago) it was the best PC for my limited budget, with:

4x PC400 DIMM slots
SATA HD
DVD-RW
1394 FirWire

My pagefile reaches 250mb+ quite a bit. I also need another HD, but I don't know if the stock 300w PSU can handle it, or if I can squeeze one in the case in place of the CD-ROM drive.

I was thinking about reading up and building a PC, but maybe some RAM and another HD can hold me over until the AMD dual core prices come down a bit.

Some motherboards do like like mixing and matching ram. But some dont mid. So its a chance to take. But if you still want the dual ram, get another 512 megs but get it in 2 times 256, if you get the 512 meg stick you will lose dual channel.

If you're adding one or two 512MB RAM sticks, make sure you put those 2 in DIMM0 & DIMM1. Your slots have numbers, possible 0-3 or 1-4, the biggest RAM should be in the first slots.
As you have a 4GB RAM limit I do not think you'll encounter problems with installing new RAM. Just make sure they are on the same speed. You got DDR-400 PC3200 and you're new sticks should be the same.
