Default installed new ram, now my pc wont turn on properly, help!

i installed 256mb of ram the other day to make my pc run at its amazing maximum of 512mb, the ram it self looked odd, it had the black boxes on both sides, mine has it on side, so i installed it anyway, i turned my pc on and it wouldnt turn on properly, everything would run inside but the screen wouldnt show anything and the on light wouldnt light, the on below it would though. when i hit restart button it dosent seem to turn off at all just carry on running, even when i put the old ram back in it ran it would not run properly, so now i have a pc that seems to half run, like as if its stuck in stand by or something, please dont say this a serious problem and is easy to fix, i really need help bad, im getting some computerguy to come over soon to see what he can do... when i get his number of a freind. Thanks you so so so so much, this is the worst time for this happen. thanks again.

Sounds like you got the wrong RAM (speed - FSB, or a make that isn't compatible with your motherboard). Best thing to do is check out this handy tool to check exactly what RAM you need: http://www.crucial.com/uk/ (top right).

Well you could at least try to whipe the old one out and only run with the new one. You could see if your new stick maybe faulty or not compatible.

yeah ive done that before but this time i didnt want to buy of crucial as they charge to much so i bought it of a power seller from ebay, it was the same as my last stick 256mb, 168pin and 133mhz. but maybe it is a make that isnt comptatible!

Hi there tom_b!
You might have misunderstand me but what I was talkin' about was to physically remove the stick from your mainboard, and see if it will work. As I read you installed the new RAM I think you know how to remove RAM too? You can easily push the white clips on the sides away and your stick will come up a little. You can lift it out now.
If you got any questions just post.
