Default [Fixed] Wrong ram?

Hello there,
Hope you can help me. I have quite an old pc. It had two 64MB sticks of PC100 sdram, so i decided to add in another 128MB. I bought one and slotted it in so that it was in the first slot and the other two were in the second and third.
Now problems occur. Firstly it only registers 192MB of ram and also when running it crashed a ridiculous number of times. I took the 128MB stick out, had a look at it and found that although the label said PC100 the actual chips had "16M16 PC133 128MB" printed on them. Would that explain anything?

The motherboard is a Biostar M6TZA and i am running WIN98SE

Welcome.

It is possible that you have bought a high density ram module and as such your *older* motherboard doesn't recognise it. A result of this is that your PC will only recognize 1/2 of the stated RAM.

Start by doing 3 things:

1) See if you can put this stick into another PC to check that it is what it says it is.
2) Update your BIOS to the latest (and last) version here: http://www.biostar.com.tw/support/bi...p3?model=M6TZA
3) Try running your PC with each stick as an individual and see what each stick tells you it actually is - at the same time boot into Windows with each stick and check for stability.

I tried it with just the new ram and lo, it only registered 64Mb of the 128MB. Stability was also terrible.
I guess I'll be sending that back and finding a lower density one then.

Thanks for your help! Very much appreciated.
