That's actually really cool. I'm stumped.

Ok we're bored at work, My Collegue Craig and I have been mulling over and he had the eureka moment.

Triangle #1 break down.

Double the Green and Yellow shapes surface area equals 30 units square.

Double area of the Blue triangle is 24 unit square.

Double the area of the red triangle is 10 unit square.

30+24+10=64 unit square.

Triangle #2 Breakdown

Triangle is 5 unit high x 13 unit long

Double triangle for rectangle would be 65 unit square -1 blank square = 64 unit square.

But the first triangle is 5x13 as well...I know the answer but I want to see if anybody gets it....

I showed this to my Geometry teacher a few years ago and she couldn't figure it out...I should have asked for extra credit for stumping her on a Geometry problem

Simply put the two triangles are not identical, the angle of the smaller triangle is slightly steeper than the angle of the larger triangle, (the angle where the horiszontal and the hypotenuse meet). This actually means that the "triangles" built up of the individual pieces are not in fact triangles but four-sided objects (well i guess 7 sided in the second "triangle").
