Avoid a condescending or arrogant tone when dealing with your customers. Friendly, upbeat and helpful goes a long way.

Put flyers or business cards in other local shops, milkbars, service stations, etc to get as much free advertising as possible. Even do a letterbox drop.
Another good idea is to have a landline not just a mobile number on cards. Some people (especially older people) refuse to call mobiles and you just divert the landline to your mobile.
If you clean up a pc with malware let them know that you can't guarantee they won't get reinfected. And that if reinfection occurs due the websites etc they visit then they will be charged for any subsequent fixes. I've had some customers get reinfected within 24 hrs of getting back their pc's because they disable the antivirus, etc i have put on and they expect you to fix it again for free. I have a flyer that I give to my customers letting know what they can do to help prevent reinfection.
My customers think its great because other places just take their money and don't educate them on how they got infected and more importantly how to prevent reinfection. It makes them feel like they're getting real value for money.
And finally - don't assume if their female that they have no idea. I was trying to buy a wireless mimo router and the guy was flat out refusing to sell it to me and trying to get me to buy a "cheaper 54mbps router. He even said to me "have you ever even set one of these up before, they're not that easy you know?" in the most condescending way possible and in front of other customers. By that stage i was so angry - I'd actually setup over 10 of this particular model and told him so and that if he finds them so difficult to setup then perhaps he shouldn't be working in a computer store. Needless to say he sold me the router just to get me out the store, lol.
tyvm DIIRE excellent advice. I see this problem all the time "guy was flat out refusing to sell it to me and trying to get me to buy a "cheaper 54mbps router". I will always look after the customer because without them you wouldn't have a business.
