Default So blu ray wins, what to become of PC dvd format?

So its over, the HD-DVD vs BLU-Ray war is over.

The 360 vs PS3 war is over. (As games get better and greater visuals, they need more space, so DVD won't cut it in the future)

But as we know the king of all games, the PC still uses DVDs to install games.

So will we see the pc use BLU-Ray?

Or

Will all games be downloadable from say GAME, GAMESTATION or PLAY.coms website?

What do you all think about the pc's next format?

BLU-Ray, DVD or Download.

For me, I think it is depends on the country.
For exmple, Korea, they have some or many of HD TV Program that is airing.
Don't know other countries' situation but, i think it will depend on which format that countries' choose.

See I will be fine, as I got as dual player.. It plays Blue-Ray and HD-DVD, I happen to like HD-DVD better though, but then again I liked Betamax better than VHS lol...(for those who know what Betamax is)

Huh? How is the 'console war' over? Disc format is completely different.

The 360 vs PS3 war is over. (As games get better and greater visuals, they need more space, so DVD won't cut it in the future)
Well the console war is most definitely not over, it's very much alive still. The PS3 uses Blu-ray as standard (people at Sony are sighing in relief right about now) but the 360's HD DVD support comes as an optional add-on, which, given the circumstances now could very well indicate that a future Blu-ray add-on is very much a possibility.

100GB quad layer Blu-ray discs (that record at twice the speed of normal ones, in other words blindingly fast) are already a reality, and I've read they're supported by some players without problems (some may require a small firmware update) It's already clear that theoretically, we should expect to see BD's with capacity's of 200GB or beyond in the somewhat near future (TDK developed a 2X 100GB prototype a couple of years back), both of which by today's standard is a huge leap forward if I may say so.

Just to put into perspective, I think HD DVD had a theoretical limit of 45GB for a dual layer disc. That's still pretty impressive given what we are limited to these days on a standard DVD.

So will we see the pc use BLU-Ray?

Or

Will all games be downloadable from say GAME, GAMESTATION or PLAY.coms website?

BLU-Ray, DVD or Download.
Well I'm sure come the next generation of games we'll see further advancements in graphics and so forth, which as you say will increase the amount of data, which in turn - given enough time - will require new mediums to store the massive amount of data on. Blu-ray for me is quite clearly the next big format after DVD (whenever the DVD fades out, no time soon I'm sure), and will eventually become the standard. Downloading games could always be an option, but it'll never be a sole means of getting them. It's just not practical enough for me, not everyone has access to the internet, or the available bandwith. Of course with further advances in broadband technology using fiber optics (or VDSL, ADSL2+, WIMAX, and Cable) for those who do have it, downloading/streaming large amounts of data should become a doddle because we'll all have FAAAAAST connections lol.

Well i would go into how i think the console war is over, but i dont want a fan war, i think both the 360 and ps3 are great, to sum it up why i think its over, is because like i said, games are getting bigger, will using multiple DVDs to play a game be feasable? will developers/publishers want to do that? sure theres compression, but mroe compression = longer loading and i don't want a 5 minute loading bar.

(Please i dont want a ps3s better, 360s better etc, thats my opinion, its not fact, the war isnt officialy over, far from it, but in my eyes it might be over )

But seriously though seeing as how we are moving to fibre optic cables and whatnot (data at speed of light)

Is it a matter of time before all cd' s dvds and discs are redundant? when games can be downloaded from the website in a matter of seconds? The joys of unwrapping your new game(s) out of the plastic replaced by seeing a bar at 100%

Btw merlin, whats a betamax?
