The 360 vs PS3 war is over. (As games get better and greater visuals, they need more space, so DVD won't cut it in the future)
Well the console war is most definitely not over, it's very much alive still. The PS3 uses Blu-ray as standard (people at Sony are sighing in relief right about now) but the 360's HD DVD support comes as an optional add-on, which, given the circumstances now could very well indicate that a future Blu-ray add-on is very much a possibility.
100GB quad layer Blu-ray discs (that
record at twice the speed of normal ones, in other words blindingly fast) are already a reality, and I've read they're supported by some players without problems (some may require a small firmware update) It's already clear that theoretically, we should expect to see BD's with capacity's of 200GB or beyond in the somewhat near future (TDK developed a 2X 100GB prototype a couple of years back), both of which by today's standard is a huge leap forward if I may say so.
Just to put into perspective, I think HD DVD had a theoretical limit of 45GB for a dual layer disc. That's still pretty impressive given what we are limited to these days on a standard DVD.
So will we see the pc use BLU-Ray?
Or
Will all games be downloadable from say GAME, GAMESTATION or PLAY.coms website?
What do you all think about the pc's next format?
BLU-Ray, DVD or Download.
Well I'm sure come the next generation of games we'll see further advancements in graphics and so forth, which as you say will increase the amount of data, which in turn - given enough time - will require new mediums to store the massive amount of data on. Blu-ray for me is quite clearly the next big format after DVD (whenever the DVD fades out, no time soon I'm sure), and will eventually become the standard. Downloading games could always be an option, but it'll never be a sole means of getting them. It's just not practical enough for me, not everyone has access to the internet, or the available bandwith. Of course with further advances in broadband technology using fiber optics (
or VDSL, ADSL2+, WIMAX, and Cable) for those who do have it, downloading/streaming large amounts of data should become a doddle because we'll all have
FAAAAAST connections lol.
