Definitely a good decision considering Vista's still in it's infancy. I do think XP will be a more stable operating system than it however, at least for quite a while yet...
I too would like to try out Linux but, I get into enough trouble as it is. Thank God you guys are here. But I think that it would be a logistical mess trying to find hardware and software not to mention enough tech support to have Linux as the OS of choice, at least that how I see it. What do you think?
I appreciate that it's a free alternative, and has plenty of useful apps already built in, all of which are free/open source, that's nice. But, there are a couple of things that have driven me away each time and they're to do with software and ease of use (I don't like the GUI either, I think it looks rubbish).
You can't just install Linux and get on with it, even the most basic of tasks require you to input commands, which seems to me to be a big hassle. It's a learning process, one day I may undertake it as a small project, then when I'm completely comfortable with it I may consider switching. Until that day comes, I'm more than happy to stick with familiar old Windows.
My recommendation for you? By a Linux book, or two, read it/them closely and put the things you learn into practice. Dual boot and/or use Windows as your everyday OS, or you could even run Linux virtually, whichever you prefer. (I'd go with the latter, if I had enough
ram)...
