I've used Google Adsense, and they are without a doubt the best for targeted adverts. Not only for Ads, but if you include their search engine on your web site, it can be used by your visitors to search internally, and to make money from click made during Google searches to sponsored sites.

Altough, if you want the big money, you should be having some serious amount of daily visitors to your site. I've found on average, I will receive around $1 for every 100 visitors.

Also, don't rely too heavily on Google for your source of income. There are some horror stories of Google removing accounts for things like "Invalid Clicks". Hengis himself was disabled for some reason (I can't remember what) but managed to get back with them. I'm am also going through a similar process with Google for reasons I don't know why yet.

BidVisor I've also found to be great for targeted advertising (and I've tried many!). Very similar to Google, except you choose what categories are displayed rather than Google scanning your site for content.

You can make Adsense more effective if you take the time to place it on your website. Try to fit it in your design so it becomes part of it. Then people will click on it faster and you'll get more money.
Also, a less ethic way of making money is a socalled Adfarme. A site full of Google Adsense colums wich all look like part of the site so people THINK they have a complete site on the screen but it's just advertising. This combined with a nice url makes a lot of dirrty money

Na, they have clamped down on that Rob. In their policies, they have included a part about not having any more than three adverts on a single page.

"Up to three ad units may be displayed on each page."

Thanks for the advice Guys I will let you know how it goes. At the minute I'm getting about $10-$12 per 100 clicks but I'm getting most of my traffic in yahoo answers and from blogs so they are sort of targeted. My adsense should be up and going in a week or less. I will checkout bidvisor I've heard of it but never looked in to it

Wow, what publishing company are you with?

I'm trying out FindITQuick at the moment. Similar to Google Adsense, but still in it's infancy. The great thing I like about them so far it that you get to speak to real people and have questions answered within minutes. Everything about Google is automated, and so popular, I don't think they really care about individual publishers.
