Default dvd home cinema

hi, i know this has nothing to do with pc's, but you guys have helped me out a few times before so I thought I would give it a shot! I have just bought a panasonic SCRT30 home cinema system with 5.1 surround sound, I mainly got this for my Xbox 360, but I am having issues with it. I have been told it needs to connect with a optical cable, however on the back of the panasonic SCRT30 home cinema system there is no optical cable socket. I know this isnt to do with pc's, but do you guys know if theres any way around it, or do i need to send it back? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :o)

If there is no optical socket on both pieces of equipment then you wont be able to get 5.1 out of it. There are two ways for an audio stream containg surround sound as 5.1. Coaxial. this is a single phono lead, and the socket for this is orange coloured. and the theres the optical socket which is black and square. There is a 3rd way which is analogue 5.1 outs which are six phono sockets one for each channel and the sub, being the .1 these are connected from the DVD player to the 5.1 channel in on an AV amp.
I would return the unit for another which has both the coaxial and optical out sockets.

hi again, I have been looking around and ive found that i can get an 3.5mm adaptor for the optical cable. the dvd player had a 3.5 socket in the front for the music port, would it be possible to plug the scart from the 360 in to the tv and have the optical cable with the 3.5mm adaptor plugged in to the dvd player? would that give me 5.1 sound and vision??

No the music port will be stereo only, and you can only get prologic surround at best.
