Default problems loading WIN98 to IBM thinkpad 600e

The Thinkpad was repartioned and needs an OS. We have the boot disk and cd rom for Win 98 SE but the laptop only has a floppy drive. We downloaded a bootable floppy which loads drivers for the external USB CDROM drive. However, when we try to load WIN98 from the CDROM we get "Windows Setup Requires Largest Executable Program Size to Be at Least 4,442,368 Bytes" per http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=289727. Anything we can do to load from the external cdrom drive? If not, how else can we load OS?

Hi, you should have a setting in your bios that will allow you to raise the "base" or "lower" memory from the default 512k to 640k. Do that and re-boot..then try the install again.

What model Thinkpad do you have?

You are certainly NOT a loser!!

I am not familiar with that model and I just can't seem to get an online manual for it. Is there no help associated with the bios...do you have the manual?

Hi, thanks for the kindness The F1 function accesses "easy setup" and only lets you change date and time. Don't have the manual. The BIOS version is 1.21 so I am trying to find an updated version to download maybe? It's an old Pent II so I just want to play. I can get an internal cd drive on Ebay but then might not get the drivers??? AARGH..

To be honest THIS would be the answer! Even when you are past the installation you could still use the drive in the laptop.

Tis true, dear dir, however, don't you need the drivers for the drive?? I don't have the system disk so I have to see if I can get them somehow? Do you think Ebay is a good source for the drive itself or should I pay the real deal and get one per your link?
