Default Wireless Network Problem

Hey. Dunno where this topic belongs so sorry if it doesn't belong in this branch of the forum.

Moving on..

I recently aquired the Toshiba Satellite A100 laptop. It has a wireless network card already installed and I connect to random wireless networks around my general neighbourhood. There's this one network I connect to sometimes where the signal reaches my lap top as "excellent" and "very good" but the others are often "very low" or "limited or no connectivity".

Is there any way I can expand my range so I can continue to access these outer networks from my home?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

**I already tried a new Network Adapter card from Linksys but it didn't do anything to help.

Hey pratt14!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

What kind of router do you have?
That's the most important factor in this case I think, especially if you've tried other network adapters.

Some routers have the ability to install other firmware on it, which makes you able to improve it's signal strength.

I'm not an expert on this point, but we may look at the options once we know what router you've got.

Router?

Man, I have no idea because the router itself is not installed in my house. Like the signal I'm receiving is from a neighbour's router. The network name is "linksys" is that helps...

A router is the device that transmits the signal from the modem right?

Ah well if you're not using an own router, it will be very difficult to increase speed.
There are probably too much walls etcetera between you and the router, is that possible?
