Default PC Upgrade Help

A freind came to me recently with a computer that wouldn't read anything from IDE2. After I took apart the computer I noticed that capacitors were bubleing and leaking. The computer still worked becuase it read things from ide1(Hard drive). But who wants a cpu with only 1 IDE channel.
I upgraded from a ???? Socket A mobo w/ AMD Duron 1000mhz, to the A-Open MK73le - N Socket A. Figuered I could just swap the PC100 Ram, harddisk, and cdrive, and processor into the old case. After installation of the mobo to the case and everything connected, I tried to power the cpu...but nothing happened. I noticed the MOBO's Standby LED light came on when i pluged the power into the wall so I know the power was getting there.

My question is would that be the case of wrong ram (pc100 as opposed to pc133), or not enough power from the source?

Any help would be appretiated.

Hi Tomdabom333,

Welcome to The PCHF,

Looking at the board spec there shouldn't be any problem with the PC100 RAM.
I know this may sound weird but it's a good place to start, please check that you have all the front panel connectors correctly attached to the board (I've done this wrong a few times myself).
To check if there is a fault with the board, remove all the unnecesary PCI cards, and unplug all the IDE connectors, remove the memory module and then try powering up the pc. You should get a series of beeps from the board indicating that there is no memory inastalled. This is just a basic test to see if th board responds to a known problem.
If it does beep try adding the hardware one at a time and see if anything stops the system from booting, ideally start with only the Floppy drive and hard drive connected.
Let us know how you get on.

Hey... are u using the same power supply as u had in the other machine? because if the pSU is faulty, the mobo led will still light up, but it wont power anything..

Default update

I tested the power supply on my cpu and it worked so that's ruled out.

The mobo's standby light is lit when I plug the power into the wall.

Q: It sounds stupid but, should the mobo go though the bios(Beeps) when I insert the power into the wall, or will it wait for me to press the front panel power button. I'm thinking if I have the front panel pins connected wrong that could be the problem like you mentioned earlier.

The pc100 ram does fit right into the mobo, although on A - Open's website it doesn't say anything aobut pc100, only pc133.

Thanks for anyhelp guys.

Tom

That's pretty normal, just means that there is power getting to the board.

Some boards do, some don't, I haven't figured out which one do/don't yet and why so don't worry about that
I'm thinking if I have the front panel pins connected wrong that could be the problem like you mentioned earlier.
I have found the manual for the board here, you just have to select the corect model etc and download the manual (for some reason the link won't go directly to the download page)
I have also uploaded a part of the manual that you might need to get the correct pin attachment for the board.

The pc100 ram does fit right into the mobo, although on A - Open's website it doesn't say anything aobut pc100, only pc133.
PC100 is a lower spec than the pc133, so the board can use it. If you had a higher spec memory there might have been problems.

Keep us posted on how you get on.

Default Update # 2

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the help thus far...

Update: I got the pins in the correct position and now everything powers up as it should.

Still a problem though, I can't get the monitor to display anything from the cpu...I Started with the bare minimum (mobo w/ floppy drive connected) no IDE or PCI devices connected.

Also I was looking around on A - Open's website with the link you provided, but I couldn't seem to find model # MK73LE - N in the downloads section. Also im not quite sure what I need to get from the website(just the BIOS or what?)

Thanks again
