I am using ubuntu 9.10 and it keeps freezing on boot. I have tried using a different kernel and the recovery mode but it just keeps freezing. when i try to boot normal mode it freezes with a black screen and a blinking underscore. with recovery mode it freezes when i scroll down on the recover mode options menu. this morning i changed some of the partitions so it would hibernate but it booted then. I put it on hibernate and then when i tried to boot it now it won't. all i did was make the swap partition, file system partition and the extended partition that they are in bigger. I don't know what to try. please help.

When does it freeze? Is there any text on the screen? Right after the GRUB loading stage, try to press Ctrl+Alt+F1. Does anything happen, text scrolling or something?

after the ubuntu symbol when the blinking underscore is on a black screen i pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 and this came up:
resume: libgcrypt version: 1.4.41-eb95-4201-a0f0-11d2aa1f9367 resume: could not stat the resume device file '/dev/sda4' please type in the full path name to try again or press ENTER to boot the system: I pressed enter and a load of text came up and it booted. |

You probably suspended the computer, and it couldn't find the resume image anymore. Problem fixed?

yes. /dev/sda4 was the partition that i deleted and it still thinks it's there so i will have to delete the entry in the fstab file. i forgot i had put it there myself. thanks for the help.
