Default Linux Acer Aspire One Help

I recently purchased three acer aspire one laptops with Linux, for each of my three daughters. Two white ones, and a navy blue one.

The navy blue one constantly needs rebooting, because the internet breaks.

One of the white ones displayed lots file names yesterday, and now today, after shutting it down, I turned on the laptop and a blank black screen appears with a small white cross for the cursor. I can move it around, but I cant do anything else with it.

The reboot disc for Linux isn't working, it just doesn't load, and I can't send the laptop back because my daughter broke the space bar off and the warranty is now void.

Anyone got any idea's, would be really grateful, thank you.

emotahli,

Hello and welcome to the forum. Since we are dealing with three different laptops here I think it is best to take them on one at a time.

Are they all the same laptop aside from the color?

Regarding the first one, when you say the internet "breaks" what do you mean?

I am going to mark this as open so the rest of the staff knows it's here.

I am in fact, quite cool. My graphing calculator confirms this

Hi emotahli - Welcome to PCHF!!!

I don't think breaking the space bar would void your warranty. They should still take the laptops back and fix them for you.

Have you tried calling Acer? If not I'd try that as it could be a common problem they can easily help you fix on the phone.

The bar at the bottom of the screen dissapears, or show no small internet connection logo.

We tried to take the computer to be fixed, but they told us that they will not recover it for free as it has "not been looked after"

sorry for my late reply.

First let me just say that I've never used Linpus Linux before and I've already decided I'm not much of a fan lol. Essentially what you have is a dumbed down Linux distribution purposefully designed to hide the OS and its features from the user, to prevent you from making modifications and make it harder do anything other than run a few basic applications (that's right, instead of simplifying things, hiding the OS from the user only complicates things especially when you actually want to do something like customize and tweak it to your liking or - as in this case - something goes wrong and needs fixing!). Honestly, if you want something that looks and behaves like Windows, why are you using Linux? Use Windows!

OK, now that I've had my little rant, let's try to work through these problems for you one at a time...

The bar at the bottom of the screen dissapears, or show no small internet connection logo.
According to Acers forums this could be caused by an update as quite a few others are having the same problem. Can you try entering the following into a command line for me (on the navy blue laptop):

Code:
rm -rf ~/.gconf/system/networking
This will delete your network configuration file and should force the network manager to create them again. If you receive no errors, reboot and hopefully you'll have a working connection again.
