Default installing Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

hello, I'm trying to install Feisty on an old PII pc using a live-cd, but I can't get it run. After booting it just says error insert a system disc and press enter, like the cd isn't there. I've changed the boot settings from C first to SCSI and the Feisty cd works in another pc. I've also disconnected the hard drive and put the cd drive at the end of the ide cable and set the jumper to master. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, so I can get rid of Windows 98!

Hello Barney and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Firstly the CD drive should not be on same IDE cable as the hard drive.

I would upgrade your hard drives IDE cable, buy a newer one.

Check the hard drive jumpers are set to master,if only one CD drive fitted check that also is set to master.

Then once you have done this go into BIOS and set first boot device to to CD drive, put in CD and press F10 save and exit.I would also load fail safe defaults in BIOS.

Thanks Jelly Bean, I'll have another look at it especially the failsafe default thing in the BIOS which I've never changed. Recently the cmos battery died and I just put another one in, but perhaps some settings have been lost?

Yes the settings have been lost, you need to go back into BIOS and reset it.

I tried loading the default bios but Feisty didn't run, I'll try a new IDE cable though and see what happens - thanks for your help :o)

Another update - I went into Windows 98 and found that it would read the original Windows cd but it when I put the Feisty disc in it said the drive was inaccessible. I put a newer cd drive and IDE lead from another pc and now Windows can read what's on the Feisty disc, but it still doesn't boot from the live cd.
