Question [Answered] Xubuntu - NDISWrapper

Hey guys!

I had an old desktop that had Windows ME, and probably couldn't handle XP well, and so I tried putting Xubuntu Linux on it because it's supposed to be low on resources (runs excellently, btw).

The problem is I don't have a wired connection, so I need to install drivers for my Netgear WG111 USB adapter. Since Netgear doesn't have a Linux driver for that, I have to use NDISWrapper to use the Windows driver, right? At least, I think so. This is my first night using Linux.

Anyway, I followed these instructions (well, read them):

Matthew Halliday's Linux Development Site

Scroll down to where it has the Ubuntu icon, third box, because the first is for Linspire.

Anyway, I tried to do what it said to install NDISWrapper, but it wasn't located where it said it was to install, so I downloaded it from here:

NDISwrapper - Home

Well, that was said and done; transferred the files to the Xubuntu machine via CD, and now I have no clue how to install NDISWrapper, let alone use it to install the driver.

I did extract the driver files to /tmp, though, so those are actually on the machine, and the NDISWrapper files are in a folder on the Desktop.

So... what do I do now?

Thanks in advance,
Rodents210

AKA someone who knows nothing about Linux so don't even try any fancy-talk.

P.S. As you go, could you please explain what each thing does so I could get to know the Operating System better? This is assuming we have to use the Terminal.

I'm a newbie with linux too Rodents210 but I found the following link on NdisWrapper very informative. So much so I captured it to a pdf file...lol

NdisWrapper: The Ultimate Guide - LinuxQuestions.org

I'm running Mandriva 7 and Win2k on the same machine using a wireless adapter. You might look into linux-wlan-ng Project. I had more luck using wlan-ng than NdisWrapper.

Sorry I couldn't be more help...

Hehe, thanks. I managed to get NdisWrapper installed fine now (not how it says, but I managed to figure it out myself), but I still can't get the driver to work. Step 3 of Using NdisWrapper to Install the Drivers is where I start getting lost. Then I just don't know how to do the next step cause it seems to do the same thing as the 3rd.

I do have more than one type of driver on the WG111's CD-ROM, so I'm going to try each of those.

I tried 3 different USB adapters with only mixed results. I finally had to install a wireless card for a stable connection. I see alot a possibilities in the linux OS. It's worth the extra work.

Good Luck
