Question [Answered] Oops... cant boot linux anymore because I changed GRUB!!!

Im running Windows XP and Linux on my HP laptop. Im using GRUB to dual boot. But I made a stupid mistake... I changed GRUB from linux so that it only gives the windows option to boot. The linux option has disappeared.

Is there a way to get the linux option back? I only know how to change GRUB from linux but the problem is I cant reach it. Can you do it from windows? I am able to go to the GRUB prompt, but I havent got a clue to what to do there.

Since it has been I while I used linux for the last time and I experimented with some versions, I cant remember the exact linux version I've installed...

Please help me!!!

If you can access your Linux partition from Windows... The GRUB menu file is located in /boot/grub, the filename is menu.lst. Copy/paste the menu.lst file here, and I will see what I can do.

Thanks for your reply.

My menu.Ist file reads:

default 0

title windows
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

However, I've changed the Grub installation yesterday from the grub prompt by:
find /boot/grub/stage1
root (hd0,4)
setup (hd0)

But that didnt seem to change anything, I still get only the windows option.

My menu.Ist.old reads:

timeout 5
default 1

title linux
kernel (hd0,4)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5 resume=/dev/hda6 splash=silent vga=788
initrd (hd0,4)/boot/initrd.img

title windows
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

Try replacing menu.lst with menu.lst.old (just take the .old off and it will overwrite it). The old file is normal, the current is not.

(You are lucky, you have a simple boot menu... Mine (used to, until my desktop died) shows 2 kernels and 2 recovery modes, and then Windows )
