Depends on what kinda website you want.

If you intend to run server side software such as forums/blogs etc you need to look at setting up LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) if it's just a static page go towards the lighthttpd side.

There are a number of articles such as this How To Set Up A Ubuntu/Debian LAMP Server | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials on how to do it.

The other easy method is downlaod the Ubuntu-Server and it will install a full lamp server for you, you will have no desktop though (that's an easy fix, apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)

Hello there!
Thanks for your quick reply. I had a look and followed some instructions but I'm having trouble with php, and also (i think) apache.
The php problem is that php doesnt appear to be doing anything. No pre-processing occurs whatsoever and files titled *.php are downloaded rather than loading in the browser.

My apache problem...

When i do the following
> sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
I get:...
* Forcing reload of web server (apache2)... apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName
httpd (no pid file) not running
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName
(98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs

Not a clue what any of it is... :-(

Anybody? :-)

Edit: Since i posted this i cant even get into the directory. Nothing works at all

w00t! Thanks for the link.
After a couple of hours doing basically nothing, i managed to find that I needed to put a ServerName into an apache config file for it to work properly. Managed to remove an old apache that was causing trouble and get php working.
I havent tested whether the mysql stuff works with the php but so far so good.

Uno question:
Is there any advantage of using ftp rather than ssh to remotely manage files on my pc?

Not really, when using ssh you have access to both scp and sftp which are much more secure than FTP due to the fact it's all encrypted.

I'm glad you got it sorted

Well thanks for that reply.
I already installed ssh so i`ll stick with that as i know the people accessing my pc all have linux and use ssh anyways. Thanks :-)
