Question [Answered] Seriously need help with Kanotix and Grub

I have a PC with an 8 gig hard drive and a 250 gig hard drive. on the 8 gig I have installed windows xp pro. on the 250 gig I created an 8 gig partition to install Kanotix to.(really it's 7gig for Kanotix and 1 gig for swap) Anyway, I went through the Kanotix and all went well until I rebooted. then I got an error that looked like this.

Grub Loading Please wait..
Grub Error 17

Then the PC just stops and I can't boot Xp or Kanotix. I did some research but I'm really new to Linux and couldn't find a step by step way to resolve this problem. Apparantly error 17 comes up because there was a problem mounting the drive yet when I check, it says that the root partition is mounted so I don't know what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It could be any number of things.

The first step would probably to boot from a livecd and see if you can mount said partitions and that the partition table isn't fubar.

If all's well and good in the land of the partition table try reinstalling grub.

While [obviously] not targeted at kanotix this should be helpful if you do need to reinstall grub.

Have fun ;-)
