Im working on installing linux on a blank hdd. nothing no partitons at all.
When you install the hard drive, in between the ide connector and the power connector, youll see 8 or 10 pins with some little black caps over 1 or 2 of them. Somewhere on the hard drive is a diagram showing you which pins to put the caps over to configure the drive as: Master> cable select> slave> master with slave(this will depend on the mfg) . Sometimes it is marked on the circuit board on the back directly over the pins.(ms, cs, sl...ect) If this is the only drive on the machine for this install, set it to master.

It is the only HD on the system and it has nothing on it. Used kill disk to erase everything. Its a SATA HD. The caps ontop of the wires that you can plug into your hard drive next to your SATA cable, Is makred P9. Theres also 3 others along with this one, one is P10, P5 and P4 the P4 and P5 are white caps and the other two, P9 and P10 are black caps, I regularly have P9 as the one plugged into the hard drive. Is that the master?

ok, im sorry, i should have asked what kind of drive it was to start with. Im not familiar with the sata drives, all my stuff and the stuff i work on is ide. Im sure someone else here can answer your question, or you can go to the drive mfgs website and get a manual and a schematic/pinout of the wiring. Give us the make and model of the drive.

Well Ok, I formatted it with Windows and used my CD Key, But I partitioned two drives and I want to slap Linux on the D drive. Is there a way Ubuntu will let me choose that partition to isntall to? I didnt format the D drive yet.

Yes, when you install you can choose manual partitioning and use the D: partition. Ubuntu has an excellent partitioning tool, thats easy to use, and the installer pretty much does everything for you. You will be given an option of where to install the bootloader(Grub), i suggest installing it to the MBR. When you boot up, youll have the option to boot to windows, or Ubuntu. But dualbooting is not without potential problems, if its done wrong, you can wipe out all your windows stuff, or make it inaccessable. Since this is a fresh install anyway, youre pretty safe, at worst youd have to reinstall everything.lol If you have data on the windows drive, always back it up before installing. I suggest reading some tutorials and doing a little research first. To save alot of typing, and the possibility that i might forget and leave out a crucial step and mess up the punch line for you, heres some good guides on dual boot installations, and general info on Ubuntu:
