[Resolved] Linux installation partitions :-(
Hi,
I'm a complete linux noob.
I got an ubuntu CD to try it out but i'm unsure of the installation.
I don't want to overwrite my windows installation.
I have windows xp installed on a 110gb partition and about 45 gig free.
Can anybody guide me thru the installation so i dont make any big mistakes?
I think i can manage the rest its just the partitioning and setting mount points or whatever it is :-)
Also, i have a linksys wusb54g wireless usb device which i believe requires xp sp1 to work. What do i need to get it working on ubuntu?
Thanx in advance for your help.
Joe

I suggest you read some tutorials on dual booting, and linux in general, since youre new to both. Heres a good place to start:
Dual Booting with Windows-Linux Tutorials, HOWTO's & Reference Material-Linux Forums
Theres alot of good info on there, and they have a section dedicated to ubuntu. You can also check here:
Ubuntu Forums
Just do a search on dual booting, and theres lots of info on it. Not that its that hard to do, and im not trying to discourage you, but you CAN wipe out your windows stuff pretty easy, or make it inaccessable if you do it wrong. The ubuntu installation cd will actually do most of it for you. If you choose automatic partitioning, it will install it on your free space, and you can install the bootloader(grub) to the mbr in windows. Then you will have the option to boot to either one. But there are a number of ways it can be done, so do some reading first. If you just want to try linux to see if youll like it, i suggest one of the live cd`s, which ubuntu is available in. Or get a spare small hd, and put it on that. If you decide to dual boot, make sure you make backups of everything on your windows partition. I use ubuntu, and i like it, but if youre used to windows, it takes some getting used to, but i think youll like it. Good luck, have fun, and dont forget to BACK UP.
Edit:
As far as the router, ubuntu has pretty good hardware detection, and it may work ok. If not, search those two forums, and someone will have info on how to set it up.

Thanks for the reply.
I already got ubuntu working ok, i just set partitions that i wanted and did the automatic install. It installed itself nicely without killing any windows stuff and also when i boot up it gives me the option of which OS to load, which is nice. :-)
I think to get my wireless thingy working i need to use ndiswrapper and the driver for windows.
However i dont have a clue what to do. :-)
Any help would be much appreciated as i have never used linux at all so i dont know where to start :-(
Thanx folks

Ive always had dialup here, so ive never set up a router in linux. Have a look here, and see if it helps:
Ubuntu - NdisWrapper

the part about wiping your windows stuff is true it happened to me with fedora i didn't like it and decided to delete the fedora partition and it screwed up my windows xp partition and my recovery partition it was a good thing that my pc was still under waranty and got the recovery disks for free

Well i had a look at the other forums but i just dont understand what to do at all.
I tried following the instructions only to get lots of error messages and no result whatsoever :-)
Shud i give up and accept that i`m doomed to use windows for the rest of my life? :-O
I start university in 1 week, i think i have to learn how to use redhat linux at some point.
One more thing...
Does anybody know if there might possibly be any version of linux which could automatically install the drivers for my wusb54g? :-) I'm just experimenting to see which OS i prefer so any suggestions other than windows will be acknowledged and probably installed. (as long as its free)
