Default Linux Install Crash

I'm totally new to this Linux stuff...

Installing Debian. (Downloading Ubuntu. Maybe I'll have better luck with it.) The installer is crashing after I create my partitions. I've tried repeatedly. Progress just freezes (never in exactly the same spot) and most of the times, the caps/scoll lock lights were flashing.

I'd try to help myself, but there are so many variants of Linux, and so many tutorials online, many of them outdated, it's a real mess for a newbie such as myself to get things going...

So. What do I do? Should I pin my hopes on Ubuntu? Do I have hardware issues? Is it because one of my partitions already exsisted as a fat32 with windows on it?

Same result with other cds. The computer isn't freezing due to the installer, it's just freezing after a few minutes. Testing on another computer now...

Say, if any mods wanna move or delete this...the topic isn't related to the problem any more. Now I'm just fooling around trying to see what's causing the crashes.

Is the installer just crashing? Is there an option to copy the installition cd to your hd? if did this with mandrake to stop it getting stuck on a particular file!
