My Experience with Ubuntu So Far
Well, let me tell you, Linux is not very friendly. It's like that gruff janitor who always seemed to get everything done.
Anyway, I'm liking Ubuntu. i haven't got it set in multiboot yet and I had to put XP back on to make sure I could be here tonight.
I still have very little clue as to what I'm doing but luckily my singer used Mandrake for 2 years. I'm happy to finally have had a chance to tinker with the kernel. It really does what you want it to do as long as you know how to make it.
The instalation was really a snap though it takes about 30 - 45 minutes to completely install it automatically detected my GeForce5200FX and my Nforce onboard sound. In my studio it detected our ****py RagePro and our 24 bit Audigy2 7.1 card. I was pretty impressed. I had to slipstream XP to detect anything on my Home PC and still the Sound Card in my Studio (XP Autodetects the video card in the studio computer).
As soon as Ubuntu was installed I opened up Mozilla Firefox and hopped on the internet. Well searching for video content isn't very fun but I've probably just not found the right program.
Another problem I'm having is installing programs without using the Synaptic Package Manager or the Add Programs feature. I'll learn how to yet though:computer_.
It took some work to access the root user as it's inconveniently locked away but with some work I finally accessed it.
All in all Ubuntu made using Linux pretty easy. The terminal still seems to be a huge part of the OS which I guess is a good thing, but pretty daunting to learn. It's still fun learning a new OS.
If you've been interested in dabbling with a Linux distro, Ubuntu is a good starting point. It also has some pretty high quality software bundled in and a wid variety of included games. Though not very exciting games.
