Default How to disable S.M.A.R.T

How do you disable S.M.A.R.T?

I'm trying to disable it on a Toshiba Satellite laptop and there's no option in the BIOS for it.

I know the benefits of having S.M.A.R.T enabled and all that jazz, but I am getting this annoying message on boot-up that I would just rather not have to see every time and quite frankly, I don't care about it, it's a laptop that I have Windows on (I have two other main ones running Linux) so, you see, I just want the message gone! lol

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Christa

If there is no option to disable in the bios Christa you may well be stuck with it.

That's an interesting problem! I'd recommend to have a look on this: S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Tools | Get S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Tools at SourceForge.net

You could also search for utility kit (if exists) on Toshiba's site.

The idea of S.M.A.R.T. is to let you know that the hard drive is going to fail. So this give you a short window of opportunity to make backups of all of your important files etc..

This then saves you having to come back to this forum, asking how to recover your important files from a dead hard drive.

So it will be far easier for you to put up with a S.M.A.R.T. message on boot, that would not be on screen for more than a couple of seconds...

Well, I understand what the idea of S.M.A.R.T is... but I don't use that laptop for anything other than well... to play poker online with it, cause the site/program won't work with Linux (at this time). I don't have anything stored on it, nor will I... I just find it annoying every time I start the computer to see that message. And quite frankly, I don't care if it craps out on me in the future cause, like I said, I don't use it for anything other than "windows-only" use.

I installed the smartmontools program. I entered a command that I found in another post:
"smartctl -- smart=off -- saveauto=on /dev/hda"
but that didn't work, said Function not implemented. SMART disable failed.
So, I'm not sure, I went through the help function and honestly, it's all jargon to me.. LOL. I tried a few commands I found within the help function, but apparently they didn't work cause I'm still getting the error.

And I couldn't find anything on the Toshiba site, not that I really expected to.

I'm starting to believe that the only reason I hang onto that laptop is for me to pick at and mess around with, I think I get some kind of evil enjoyment out of it... haha

So, just on another topic a bit, but how much are laptop hdd's nowadays? And are they hard to install or easy like with desktop's? Just wondering if it was worth it to put another hdd in it. It's quite a sin cause the laptop itself is in great condition, new battery in it too and its a nice color (LOL).

Ohhh, decisions decisions....

Hi

To disable SMART you have to use ATA commands that communicate directly with the drive logic, and when this is detected, many drives (or, independently, the system's BIOS itself) will report a SMART failure.

You can give this a try http://mirror.href.com/thestarman/as.../ATAscript.htm

Replacing the HDD is a straightforward procedure that requires a basic skill (and ESD precautions).

Have you heard about HDD cloning? That may be the answer you seek...
