My daughter was just given an HP Mini for her birthday with Windows XP and I had hoped she would be able to use the I/O Magic IDVD 8P portable DVD-RW drive I use with my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop. We bought the drive in the US so we could watch all our US-code DVDs in Germany on my German laptop since the DVD drives are all hard-wired with the country codes and to take the stress off the drive in the computer when my husband goes on a ripping frenzy. It plays and burns without a hitch with the Amilo.
The drive works fine on the HP Mini with CDs, but when a DVD goes in it just whirs and stops and whirs and stops and the portable drive icon never comes up on the "my computer" menu. Is there anyway to fix this problem? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, but that is the extent of my brillant ideas.

Oh dear, does no one have an idea what could be wrong? It does not seem to be a compatability problem, at least not as far as my research shows.
Could it perhaps be that the new Mini has no program to recognise a DVD? Should I try downloading one? |

Does this external player have it's own power supply or is it just relying on the power supplied by the USB connection?

Win XP does not have a dvd codec, you will need to install one.
A good way of doing this is to download the free Media Player Classic (I use this), which will play dvd's out of the box... Free-Codecs.com :: Download Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 : Media Player Classic is an enhanced version of Media Player 6.4

It takes its power from the USB connection. I will install a DVD decoder and hope that fixes the problem.
