My laptop is dying. I will replace it very soon with a macbook. I have a Compaq Presario V2665.
However, I cannot do it soon enough and I need my laptop to power on until I am ready to replace it. My power cord and battery died about the same time. Because of money issues I purchased a new power cord first. It doesn't really work to bypass the battery because if I bump the laptop it will shut off. It's too touchy to really use the computer without a battery.
So now I am ready to purchase a battery. Since I will be replacing this laptop soon, I don't want to purchase the more expensive name brand battery. I am looking on ebay and the like to find a generic battery. The question that I have is how exactly the same does it need to be to my original battery. The only specs I have on the old battery itself are:
HSTNN-IB17 (lithium-ion battery module)
10.8V
4.0 AHr
HP Spare number 396602-001
I have found batteries that claim to match this replacement spare number that have kind of different specs. One in particular says only:
10.8V
4400 mah
I don't know what mah and AHr stand for so that is why I am asking my question here. From what I can figure, these are basically the same but but with three less decimal spaces. Like 4.0 AHR is the same as 4000 mah? I'm not positive. Do these specs match what I need or not? If not what should I be looking for? Thanks in advance for any help.
Meagan
Also, I cannot find generic batteries that match both the Voltage and the mah/AHr

Hello livinirie84. Wejcome back to PCHF...
![]() You will find that generic batteries are usually manufacturer over runs or rebuilds of dead units. Be careful when dealing with these places that sell generic batteries because of substandard workmanship. Check the place you buy from. The two terms mAH(milliAmp Hour) and AHr(Amp Hour) are forms of measurment. 1 Amp = 1000 milliAmps so 4.0 AHr = 4000 mAH This is just different ways of measuring how long the battery will last between charges. The higher the number, the longer runtime is. You should be fine if the voltages are the same. LC |

That's what I fiugured when I saw the similar numbers (4.4, 4400). Thanks for the info. I know that buying a generic battery is not ideal but I just need it to power on for a few more months. I'm too broke to buy a new battery for this one and save up for my new laptop at the same time.
Thanks again for your help. |

Hello livinirie84!
Lord Chance is quite correct here. Being careful is the thing to do. The generic batteries are really not a bad deal at all... most of them anymore do a pretty good job of keeping up the pace, so you should be fine in buying one for your short term needs. Have you found anything that suits your needs and budget? I have some ideas, should you need them. Let us know.. if things are all just fine, I can close this thread. Be well
