Question Help needed selecting netbook/external drive

Please help. I am going on a trip for 3 weeks. i will be shooting HD video and need to store it to take home. i was told that netbook/external hard drive (500-1000gb??) combo is the ticket.
I will travel where recharging more than once a day will be a problem.
the flash drive in camcorder can hold 32gb.
i will be shooting up to 2-3 hrs a day.
this setup has to be light and very portable as weight and carrying it around is going to be an issue.
what would i need to transfer from flash drive in camcorder to the external hard drive? i know this might not be the right forum but i am trying to nail down the computer part of this setup.
i know that i need Windows as OP.
the netbook has to be 8.9-10.? in. i will use it after the trip as well to surf the net and get email. it will never be used as the main PC.
what other info should i provide to get the help i need?
Thank you so much for all your wonderful help. i love this forum.

Hi ebaskin,

You should just be able to connect up the external hdd and camcorder via usb and have them show up as drives in My Computer.

Then you should just be able to simply copy the file from the camcorder to the external hdd. Without knowing the make and model of the camcorder however I can't be sure.

You will need to get a 2.5" hdd external hard drive, as a 3.5" will require it's own power supply because they need more power. If you're only going to be transferring once a day when you actually have power then you can get a 3.5".

Please post back with the make and model of the camcorder so we can check the if you can transfer through Windows Explorer?

I am almost 100% sure i will be transferring once a day when i have power. Weight is big issue as is the cost of course. i am going broke just paying for the trip

Hi there,my personal prefrence is I dont like Acer.

I bought this recently:

Amazon.com: Samsung NC10-14GB 10.2-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 6 Cell Battery, XP Home) Blue: Computers & PC Hardware

Upgraded the RAM to gig and installed Vista Ultimate 32 bit.

I strongly advise you to invest in a good netbook bag not a laptop bag.Tech Air brand are very good.Netbook cases are not sturdy and to keep your new netbook safe I definantly would buy a quality netbook bag.

Jelly Bean, thank you for your response. i read some reviews on Samsung and the best they say about it is that it is nothing special. i know to take it with a grain of salt but what is your experience?
As for TechAir, not going to happen. I am in US and they don't sell here. however, since this entire setup is for a trip overseas, i will see what i can find there

Personaly on Samsung I have a few items in my home of this brand.

One being my sterio.I bought it gosh I think 17-18 years ago and it is still going strong.I onced had to fix the CD drive myself and give it a clean. It is still perfect sound.

I have the samsung netbook and I spent a lot of hours searching around for either a laptop or a netbook.

I also say Toshiba is very good.I have a Toshiba laptop she is old and I have got to say she is still perfect.Never had to replace parts,I did upgrade the RAM.Sturdy and relyable.

My Samsung NC10 run great with the one gig of RAM.But hey a little more is all good.

I was dissapointed it only had one RAM slot and had to buy a complete 2 gig DDR2.But you must remember they are very small and dont have a lot of room.

Battery life appears good so far.It actualy has a full sized laptop keyboard so it is easier to use.A lot of netbooks have small keyboards like the ASUS Eee PC,of which I have worked on recently.

You may wish to check out the ASUS netbooks also.

The majority of Acer computers/laptops/netbooks I have worked on lately all have had issues. But hey to be honest that could be the actual user not the manufacturers problem.

It is just a personal choice of myne that I would choose a well known brand such as Toshiba,Samsung.

I also looked at the fact a lot of netbooks only had 8 gig HDDs not a lot of space there. So it was looking at a combination of price, power, size, weight and so on.

I needed something upgradeable with a larger HDD space like the Samsung has 160 gig HDD.

I wanted something sleek and stylish which the NC10 has a lovely sheen to it and appears scratch free so far.

But I wish I waited to buy the NC10 as the Atom CPU is a 1.6 GHZ and manufacturer are soon to upgrade the Atom to 2.0 ghz so a little dissapointing.

Ok now to the basics,it boots up fast,I can open multiple web pages with no lag.It is WIFI capable,my wireless connection speed is full and steady have no issues at all.

But if you like your music then netbooks are just not capable of playing a decent sound, with most brands this is the case.Tiny sound. So invest in portable speakers or a mini headset, the sound sounds that bit better.

Ok you cannot get Tech Air in the States,I advis you shop around and make sure you buy a netbbok bag with some sort of padding to keep your new netbook safe.

I dropped my Tech Air bag recently with my netbook in it and hey the bag saved my netbook completly. So look for something decent enough with a few pockets to carry a few extras. You can buy hard covers but they do not have the protectorbility as a padded netbook bag.

Back to your choice,it realy is a personal choice,if you wish to buy the Acer then buy the Acer. The specs appear the same as the NC10 with same CPU,HDD and so on.It would run Vista if you wish to upgrade from XP some time in the future.Invest in upgrade your RAM to 2 gig and you should do fine.

Please remember netbooks dont have CD/DVD rom drives so you may wish to buy an external but hey everything can be put to the hard drive one way or another such as external hard drives and USB pen drives.
