I need serious help. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 (V2565)
It has always run really hot. Even when not using it. I would always have to turn it off when I was done with it. All of a sudden, I couldn't use the laptop without it being plugged in. I realized I had no battery power.
Now I cannot even turn it on if it is plugged in. Its like the battery has actually sucked out everything so that it can't work at all.
I need help bad. I have to be able to power up this computer. At least just to get everything off of it. Thanks in advance.
Meagan

Hello Meagan,
Laptop batteries need to be replaced every few years. The battery's ability to take & retain a charge diminishes over time, much like the small home rechargables. Power bricks also fail in time. I've seen many a laptop need a replacement power brick from the manufacturer after 2 or 3 years times. Suggest that you contact the manufacturer for replacement of both or at a minimum the power brick if you wish to continue using the laptop. HOWEVER, if you can give up the laptop and truly only want the data, please consider removing the hard drive from the system and using a specialty cable available from any tech store or internet site, connect the drive as a "slave" or 2nd drive on another computer. You will be able to retrieve your data in that fashion.

Thanks so much for your help. I am really low on money and this computer is definitely on the back burner while I have a work computer for a few more weeks.
What is my best bet to get this computer running cheaply. Can I avoid the manufacturer? Are these sold online? Can I bypass the battery for a little while and only purchase a power cord for now? As for the data, I have most of my data on an external hd as it is. I really just need the internet access. I need to use the computer for a little while longer. Thanks again. Meagan |

I believe that there are "generic" power bricks, but I've had no experience with them. You would be able to check that on the Internet or any local retail computer store. Perhaps even Walmart....
Do check with the manufacturer as well. Sometimes you can be surprised by their pricing. Absolutely, you can run a laptop without a battery using only the power brick. Of course, that makes the functionality of the laptop a lost thing, but that happens.

Well thanks so much for your help. I think I'm willing to sacrifice the portability for a little while until I can afford a new battery also. Thanks again.

Excellent find, Vger!
Meagan, Be careful about purchasing from overseas with eBay. Like any eBay transaction, really. Check the sources carefully before providing credit information.
