Having been 'examined' and found to be virus free, I still have this problem.

It became apparent when I found that I could not connect to internet. I opened my AVIRA free anti virus and found that it was turned off (not by me of course) and it wouldn't let me run a scan. It will not turn on again.
I uninstalled my modem (don't really know why) and found I could not re-install the modem.
Windows firewall remains active.
Seems all problems (probably some I do not know about) are related to internet. Computer working fine otherwise.
It might be significant that the problem became apparent after my download of 'XoftSpySE' because, having noticed it on the report and related it timewise to the problem,I have tried to uninstall it - without success. Each try has failed AND has locked my computer
I am using my (very, very slow) spare computer upstairs at the moment, so can run checks and things on the problem pc (downstairs), put the findings on a memory stick and report from this one.

I am now struggling - can anyone help me please
