Exclamation Having Real Difficulty Making My Old Laptop C

My old 6 year old laptop, used mainly for downloading and watching movies died today, I took it to the local fixer and they told me windows was dead, they reinstalled XP again and saved all of my data but when I got home I couldn't connect it to the internet

I have had this problem before, I moved my laptop from one house to another and the same thing happened, luckily I had the cash to buy a new laptop but I still wanted the old one for the tasks I mentioned before, unfortunately I couldn't get it working then so I just left it a few months until one day I plugged in the USB cable from the modem and the internet came back!
I've got no idea how this happened but was grateful to the gods for letting me download onto the old dog again!

This time I don't have the time to wait for it to decide it wants to work again so I really need help!

It's an old Novatech custom build but all of the components are Fujitsu, Sony etc, it's running on XP and I'm using a 1mb connection, Speedtouch modem and an SMC wireless router, the router is used by my new laptop with wireless but before today the old laptop was connected to the Speedtouch modem via USB and I've tried the same connection plus a few others that may have worked but I STILL can't connect!

Please please please someone help me

I should have mentioned that I've called my ISP and they are baffled, I should also mention that I can get internet but it's as slow as an old goat and most of the time the pages don't load in time before they've timed out, I have checked the 'Local Area Connection Status' and the activity shows that a total of 38 bytes(suppose that's what they're called) have been sent and a grand total of 2 have been received, it's normally in the tens of thousands...
I have turned off all firewall processes and anything else that may have been slowing it down...

have you tried to flush the dns on the machine to see if that helps
type cmd in the run box on thew dos that opens type ipconfig /flushdns another thing to try is open internet and click file ( if you cant see file ) at the top under the address bar press the "alt" key on your keyboard and make sure work offline is not ticked you can also try to renew the ip addy by doing the same as above except type ipconfig /renewall at the command
hope this helps

Thanks for your reply bigbadjohn, I tried what you suggested but still no connection, the odd thing is that next to the clock I've got a 'Local Area Connection' icon flickering saying I've got a speed of 100.0 Mbps and status: connected, what does this mean if I can't get on the internet?

are you using a wireless router connected to the modem m8 ? if so try turning of the routers firewall ( temporarily) to see if you get access then) your routers homepage addy should like this 192.168.2.1 ( you should find the correct addy in the documentation pack that came with it ( type it in the address bar of i/e explorer ) another thing you can try is go to control pnel and then network internet connections make sure that the connection you are using is set to default you can do this by right clicking the icon ( sometimes it is better to restart the pc for the settingts to take affect)

thaicook,

Hello and welcome to the forum! Have you tried updating the drivers for your wireless card?

Please take a look at your Control Panel..

Under Device Manager, are there any Yellow ! points?

As Crush has said, there are most likely updates for your XP machine.

I'm checking on updates for your Novatech..

Do you happen to know which BIOS maker and vers you are running?
