Hi.
My internet was set up by someone and im not entirely sure how it was done. However i know that the connection comes via a DSL modem into a desktop. From there a wireless router is connected to the desktop. However for some reason i cannot get the wireless router to connect to the internet.
If someone could instruct me how to make the wireless router connect i would be very grateful! The desktop is definately connected to the internet (i'm using it now).
Thanks
Jon

Welcome to PCHF - I'm sure you'll find the solution here.
I'm a bit confused about what kit you have. So from the telephone point in the wall please describe exactly what you have. From what you said is it? Wall Socket - Modem - Wireless Router - PC(s) Please advise make & model of each bit of kit

Thanks for your quick reply
Ok so it's: Wall - Modem (BT voyager USB ADSL Modem) - Desktop (Dell Dimension 8300) - Wireless Router (Belkin N wireless router) The wireless router is not directly connected to the modem and due to it being an old modem this is not possible (its a usb connection) Is that everything you need to kow about it? |

Okay - thanks - the modem goes into the PC and you have the internet.
The router is connected to the PC and you want other PC's to connect to that router and get the internet. What are the other PC's? wireless laptop, etc ?

Yea desktop is connected to modem and can access internet. There are 2 laptops using wireless that want to connect to the wireless router. A toshiba and a mac. The lights on the wireless router show that the modem and internet are not connected to it. I'm sure it is possible to do it i just don't know how!

Next step get your PC talking to the router via:
Control Panel - Network Setup Wizard - Share an Internet Connection

Hello ! This sounds a similar issue we have had with a siemens 587 router supplied by Tiscali. Everything says that all parts were working ok but there was no action on Internet Explorer.... the first suggestion was that it was a firewall issue..but eventually.. 5hrs later! we worked out that the autoplay on cd did not ask for username & password so managed to locate the manual version of set up & entered the username & password...hey presto!.
Today however , a guest laptop with allsorts of nasty bugs on it, wasnt being allowed on our router even after we sorted the bugs...cos I could nt raise the correct page of the manual setup to enter the password etc. [This was via http://192.168.1.1.] I have a week to sort this before the laptop returns for another visit.!...Any bright ideas? |
