Default Ethernet port does not work properly

Hi everyone,
The ethernet port for my inspiron 1150 notebook does not function properly. I don't see the blinking red/orange light when I connect it to the modem.
The cord is not able to make contact with the notebook's port.
In order to overcome this problem, I want to setup a network at home using a wireless router. But for that too, I need to first setup an IP address on the router which means that I have to connect my router to the notebook using an ethernet cord.
I was wondering if it is possible to connect the two using a USB port instead. I hope all this makes sense to someone reading this and hope you can provide an answer.

Thanks in advance.

hi,

Your router should already have an address range assigned. Try entering the following in a browser, to get to your router config pages;

http://192.168.1.1
http://192.168.0.1
